Forsaken is the third paid expansion to Destiny 2 and marked the beginning of the title's second year. With it came a cacophony of fundamental changes to the game, including the second iteration of the weapon loadout system in Destiny 2, new subclass branches for all nine subclasses, and the long-anticipated Collections and Triumphs pages. Forsaken's release also marked the beginning of the Bungie Rewards program.
The story of the expansion revolves around the creation of the Scorn, as was discovered by the Guardian and Cayde-6 upon venturing to the Reef's Prison of Elders to provide support to Petra Venj during a prison break. However, while quelling the chaos, Cayde-6 is killed by the hand of Uldren Sov. Launching a quest for revenge by the Guardian to take down all of Uldren's Scorn Barons, and then the Awoken prince himself.

Plot[]
The story of Forsaken picks up right as Cayde-6 and the Guardian arrive at the Prison of Elders to meet Petra Venj. Upon doing so, the three split up to start quelling the freshly begun prison break. As Cayde and the Guardian fight through the prison, they each encounter a mutated, undead Eliksni species known as the Scorn. While the Guardian is fighting their way through the Scorn to reach Cayde, he is ambushed by the Scorned Barons. Despite valiantly fighting off hordes of lesser Scorn, Cayde loses his Ghost, Sundance, and is subsequently crippled by the Scorn. This allows Uldren to appropriate the Vanguard leader's weapon, the Ace of Spades, and use it to deliver the final blow. The Guardian and Petra arrive too late, and Cayde dies in the Guardian's arms.
The impact of the event permeated the Tower, breaking the Guardian's four year vow of silence, and stirring Ikora Rey to retaliate against the Awoken prince. However, Zavala won't allow it, leaving the Guardian to do what must be done. With the support of Petra and the Spider, the Guardian ventures through the Tangled Shore of the Reef, hunting the Scorned Barons one by one, until only Fikrul, the Fanatic, and Uldren Sov remain. They follow the two into an Awoken Watchtower, felling Fikrul at the entrance. This would only delay the Fanatic however, as, similarly to Guardians, Fikrul is deathless. As this is happening, Uldren uses a Shard of the Traveler to open a gateway further in the structure, as he believes his missing sister, Mara Sov, is guiding him to do. Upon doing this, he realizes the manipulation at play too late, as a Taken Chimera known as the Voice of Riven enters through the veil, swallowing the misguided prince whole. The Guardian catches up and defeats the Chimera, leaving them and Petra to deal with Uldren permanently.
Following Uldren's defeat, Petra promises answers to the Guardian, tasking them with restoring a broken Awoken Talisman first. After doing this, Petra tells the Guardian to return to the watchtower, and use the talisman to step through into the Dreaming City. This is where Petra allows the Guardian into the fold, explaining the realm of the Awoken's Dreaming City. She also divulges whose influence Uldren was afflicted by, that being Riven, of a Thousand Voices, last surviving Ahamkara, and the greatest secret of the Awoken. In collaboration with the Queen's Wrath, the Guardian assembles a fireteam of six, and ventures deep into the Dreaming City to slay Riven.
However, as she died, the Ahamkara had one final wish to grant. After the defeat of Riven, the Dreaming City was plunged into a never-ending curse fueled by the paracausal power of the wish-dragon, and orchestrated by Savathûn, the Witch Queen herself. The Hive god placed her daughter, Dûl Incaru, the Eternal Return, in the Ascendant Realm above the Dreaming City, leveraging Guardians to defeat her cyclically to prevent the demise of the Awoken realm. Dooming the Dreaming City to repeat the same three weeks endlessly.
Season of the Outlaw[]
Among the sweeping changes made to Destiny 2 at Forsaken's release, the expansion also laid the groundwork for what would become the seasonal model in Destiny 2. The Forsaken Annual Pass acted as a period of transition from DLC expansions released during the year towards four defined seasons of content in a year. Expansions and seasons were synonymous at this stage, as evidenced by the fact that Season of Opulence was initially titled Penumbra upon its reveal, but it was retroactively referred to solely as Season of Opulence at the onset of the Forsaken Annual Pass.[2]
Season of the Outlaw is the season which ran concurrently with Forsaken, beginning on September 4, 2018, and ending on December 4, 2018—prior to the launch of Black Armory.
Season of the Outlaw is Destiny 2's first named season.

This sendoff took the form of a deck of playing cards and a reversible poster. As for the digital items, preordering any edition of Forsaken would get fans the Cayde's Exotic Stash cosmetic bundle. This would include the Last Hand Ornament for the Ace of Spades, the Queen of Hearts Exotic Ship, the Standoff Exotic Emote, and the Cayde's Duds Shader.[2] These items would be exclusively available to those who preordered the expansion until the next year in 2019,[2] where they would begin showing up in the Eververse store.

In year 4 of Destiny 2, Forsaken was included as part of the Destiny 2: Legendary Edition. This edition of the game was priced at $79.99 USD and it included all of the annual expansions of Destiny 2, Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and Beyond Light.[14]
